Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
TICKETSStedelijk Museum Amsterdam is an international institution for modern and contemporary art and design from the early 20th century up to the 21st century. The museum is located in Amsterdam on the Museum square, close to the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam reopened in September 2012 after a major renovation of almost ten years. Another remarkable building (“the bathtub”) was added to the museum during this renovation. Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam offers art and design to a wide range of public in different styles and disciplines; such as paintings, sculptures, drawings but also graphic and industrial design.
It all started in 1874, when a few citizens wanted to establish a museum for modern art. The museum was founded in this year and housed in the Rijksmuseum. In 1895 the museum moved to the present building. The collection got bigger with the time. And Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam got its recognition internationally partly due to exhibitions of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings. Through the years many artists and museum directors were devoted to put the museum on the map by organizing great exhibition programs. The core focus is to collaborate closely with artists, art professionals and institutes. It really showed off and contributed to the collection nowadays. The museum’s collection counts around 90.000 objects.
There is a large collection to be seen in the digital database on their website. Furthermore the museum pays a lot of attention to the conservation of the collection as well as doing research and organizing lectures and symposia. And of course Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam keeps innovating and is trying to spread their knowledge through social media. Since education is one of the key functions, the museum offers several activities in their education department. You can be creative by doing a workshop or taking a guided tour. If you like to know, read or learn more about the museum, artists, the exhibitions and/or art movements you can visit the library. A large (new) reading room is open to the public from 12 am to 5 pm (Tuesday to Saturday), where you can also watch audio-visual material. The museum has a large museum shop and restaurant for visitors and non-visitors.
